How do YOU feel.

Have the critics ever influenced your decision? If yes, why?

Would you go to a movie regardless of bad press?

Are there any films with bad rep that you feel didn't deserve the lashings it received?

Would you go to a movie because of media hype?

Are there any films you feel have been overrated extraordinarily that doesn't deserve it?

Do you feel you will turn to critics in the future due to the ticket price rise in this current climate, making some of us more selective of what we go to see?

Answer honestly-all answers are right answers!

  1. Yes critics have influenced me. I might see something I'm not sure about seeing, read a bad review and then decide not to watch it. I also watch films deliberately because they have mixed reviews, controversy is always good!

I might love a film, then see bad reviews and question myself as to why I loved that film, and perhaps find flaws in it I didn't see at first. I tend to read reviews after the film if it resonates with me for one reason or another.

The film melancholia got mixed reviews, but I personally loved it. It got bad reviews from people I know too. On hearing these reviews (after I saw the film) I began to reflect upon it differently. While I still like the film, I am more critical about it.

Likewise with films that get rave reviews, I tend to hate it because it got rave reviews and it's a disappointment, or I automatically like it because I'm told I will.

Donnie Darko is overrated. And so is Requiem for a dream. And fight club. And Momento. Black Swan, Run Lola Run, Social Network. Inception. I don't hate these films as such, just people bang about them too much for me to really appreciate them. Plus half of them were just boring.

Yes I will read reviews in future, but I am selective about what kind of reviews I will read, for example, I do look on the Arts Picture house website for their recommended films as I generally trust their recommendations.

  2. Generally, when I see a film, I prefer to know as little about it as possible (although this is made difficult by the modern tendency to put all of the significant action in the trailer, which can almost render the film itself redundant).

Sometimes, after watching a film, I will go back and read reviews, purely out of interest. But generally, I don't know much about a film going into it. If I do, the chances are that it is because the film in question has been hyped beyond belief, which if anything, makes me less inclined to go and see it, at least initially.

A few months back I bought a Cineworld Unlimited card, which to an extent has negated the need for me to be selective with regards to what I see (within reason!), since I pay a flat rate regardless of how often I visit the cinema.

Ultimately, a review is the opinion of one person on a given day, and can be affected by any number of extraneous factors. Critics are no more infallible than any of the rest of us, and their opinions no more valid. I don't pay them much heed now, and see no reason to in the future.

I didn't really answer all of the questions, but hopefully some of the above will be useful!

  3. Have the critics ever influenced your decision? If yes, why?

Nope, I tend to base a film off my own ideas and what the trailer/synopsis tell me.

Would you go to a movie regardless of bad press?

Definatly, usually alot of films that get bad press are sometimes later corrected as cult classics.

Are there any films with bad rep that you feel didn't deserve the lashings it received?

    1. Sucker Punch - Ok fair enough that it isn't exactly the directors best work after Watchmen, but it is still a good story that dives into the imagination and creating this very abstract worlds, i think they just picked on the fact that the girls are constantly dressed slutty, which yeah it appeals to male audiences, but alot of women like it too because of its dominance towards the female gender.

    2. Initial D - Rating this film as worse then Fast and the furious is an insult beyond insults. Rotten Tomatoes gave this anime adaptation of downhill drift racing 33% while that garbage cardboard story fast and the furious got 56% when infact there was alot more story to initial D and actual talent gone into the driving and cinemtography, then those crappy 30 mile away 'intense' speed sequences which was overlayed with cheapass computer effects......*goes to corner and breathes*

Would you go to a movie because of media hype?

I think films are ruined by media hype, as you go in expecting something that everyone has rated highly to you, giving you high expectations, your more likely to dislike it afterwards.

Dark Knight is a perfect example of this, I saw the dark knights first screening and this is because im a batman fan and had to see it. It was great fair enough, but then people started to rave on and on about it, repeatedly doing sequences from it, copying the voice, making the joker the idol of the emos, that sort of bollocks, and it just sucked all the good qualities where insted of it being a comic book adaptation, they turned it into how people took Avatar too seriously, when all it was, was Dances with wolves, in space!

Are there any films you feel have been overrated extraordinarily that doesn't deserve it?

Citizen Kane - Yeah its a great piece of film work but the story becomes dull when they start going back to already interviewed characters from his past, its doesnt exactly esclate from there about him if we've already seen these characters once.

Avatar - That film will never be as good as people make it out to be, sure once again, great effects, im sure cameron spent alot of time ass kissing to get it, but again, story is crap, not even popcorn worthy, you can see those kind of stories in Pocahontis, Dances with Wolves and the majority of Native American vs American films, just because its in space doesn't change it.

High School Musical and its sequels - Making a sequel to a film justifies that the first was good, which it wasn't, not even my neiece would put herself through that garbage of terrible writing.

Attack of the block - I think my point is that by putting scum like chavs in the spotlight and trying to make them look like heroes is about as intellgent as putting bleach in your morning tea.

Happy Feet - I could bite through metal at the amount of stupidity that goes into those kind of films, a bunch of penguins that sing and one wants to dance, hand me the shot gun, its hunting season.

Do you feel you will turn to critics in the future due to the ticket price rise in this current climate, making some of us more selective of what we go to see?

Sadly yes, I do it now with video games, seeing as new ideas are running thin and we are getting a repeat of old stories that have been polished off, including the rise in tickets, it has become difficult to decide what to see.

Hope you enjoyed that rant :P

  4. Have the critics ever influenced your decision?
Truthfully I do not tend to read critics review because when I get round to read on I find that the writer put forward the personal feeling making the report bias.

Would you go to a movie regardless of bad press?
Yes, because I like to know for myself if a film is good or not I don’t ee the point of depending on someone else is opinion.

Are there any films with bad rep that you feel didn't deserve the lashings it received?
Yes, because the critic can be perceived as too harsh by not justifying the negative criticism
Would you go to a movie because of media hype?
No, for me it is down to personal taste in movie genre and may vary due to who is acting.

Are there any films you feel have been overrated extraordinarily that doesn't deserve it?
Yes, many and they all tend to be block buster movies.

Do you feel you will turn to critics in the future due to the ticket price rise in this current climate, making some of us more selective of what we go to see?
No, critics no have influence on what film I will go and see.
